Frequently asked questions

Is ARESTIN® covered by my dental insurance?

Many insurance plans provide some assistance with dental costs. You should talk with Dr Longbottom and his office staff about payment options and obtaining maximum reimbursement for treatment. In light of recent information linking periodontal disease to overall health, many insurance providers are increasing their coverage for these types of treatments. And, keep in mind that treating periodontal disease today is less costly and better for your health than waiting for the disease to cause tooth loss or lead to a more expensive periodontal or surgical procedure.

What is ARESTIN®?

ARESTIN® is a type of antibiotic. It is used together with scaling and root planing (SRP) procedures performed by Dr Longbottom for the treatment of periodontitis.

What can I expect?

Many times a deep pocket will improve, sometimes significantly, although each patient may respond differently.

Does it hurt?

Generally, there is very little, if any, discomfort during a Perioscopy appointment. Most patients are treated with anaesthesia-helping pocket visibility. Dr Longbottom will take the appropriate steps to ensure your comfort.

Is Perioscopy expensive?

Perioscopy treatment is often roughly the same or a little less than the cost of surgery. Patients often report that Perioscopy was a worthwhile investment and helped them to save their natural teeth.

How long does Perioscopy take?

Because of the intricate clinical nature of Perioscopy, procedures tend to take a bit longer than a standard appointment. Depending on the location of the teeth being cared for, treatment usually takes about two hours. (If your pockets are widespread you may need up to 4 or more visits)

Can surgery be avoided with Perioscopy?

In many cases, the need for surgery may be avoided. Gum surgery is a frequently used therapy for patients with advanced periodontitis. Now Perioscopy offers you another option which can be used to treat you comfortably and effectively without the apprehensiveness and discomfort of surgery. Dr. Longbottom will outline your treatment options, and together we can decide which option works best for you.

Is Perioscopy right for me?

If you have one or more pockets over 4mm deep, as well as other suspected dental conditions, then you may be a candidate for Perioscopy. If you are being treated for periodontal disease, the goal of Perioscopy is to get the tooth root exceptionally clean so that the gums and other surrounding tissues may become healthier. Perioscopy is especially effective in the “aesthetic zone,” or the teeth you see when you smile.

What are the advantages of Perioscopy?

Perioscopy allows Dr Longbottom to see, accurately diagnose and effectively treat periodontal and other dental conditions, which might otherwise go undetected and ultimately undermine your oral health and perhaps even affect your overall well-being. Perioscopy is a great new tool in the preservation of natural teeth and the fight against periodontal disease.

How does the dental endoscope work?

A miniature camera is attached to a tiny probe and placed below the gum line. The images are immediately displayed on a chair side video screen for Dr Longbottom and you to see. The dental endoscope provides up to 48 times magnification, disclosing minute details under the gums that, before the advent of this technology, might easily be missed.
